The family of Brenda Easter was awarded $534,025 in a medical malpractice case against the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Easter became ill after she gave birth to her daughter. She complained of trouble breathing but the hospital failed to treat her and instead sent her home. She died of pneumonia two days after she was released from the hospital.

The University appealed the decision but the appellate court affirmed the trial court and found for Easter's family. The appellate court found no error in the trial court's decision and held that it was a battle of the experts in this case. While often cases come down to a battle of the experts, it has been found that juries often side with the defendant doctor when they are unsure of whom they should believe, so it is likely Easter had more than the expert on her side.
