Avandia May Increase Risk of Heart Attack

The FDA posted a warning on May 21, 2007 regarding the type 2 diabetes drug Avandia. Studies show that the drug may cause significant increased risk of heart attack. However, other studies have not shown the same results. Patients taking Avandia are urged to speak with their doctors about potential risks.

If the studies are true that patients taking Avandia are at 30-40 percent greater risk of having a heart attack or other heart related problems, serious concerns would be raised about whether the drug is safe for people to take. Patients that suffer from diabetes already have an increased risk of heart disease. Depending on the outcome of the current and future studies, people taking Avandia that have previously suffered from a heart attack or heart problems while on Avandia may be able to take legal action against the GlaxoSmithKLine, the manufacturer of the drug.
