Novartis, the manufacturer of Zelnorm, a popular prescription medication used to treat women with irritable bowel syndrome is being pulled from the market. Novartis has announced that it will stop selling Zelnorm after studies linked it to an increase in heart attack, stroke and worsening chest pain that may lead to a heart attack. The withdrawal from the market is being made after studies completed earlier this year.
The 29 clinical studies showed that Zelnorm caused serious life threatening heart conditions in 13 patients in the 11,614 patient study. If you are taking Zelnorm you should discuss other medication options with your doctor.
