Cardiac patients should be aware that Boston Scientific, a medical device manufacturer, has recalled two separate products. 40,000 Flextone cutting balloons and 18,000 vena kava blood filters have been recalled from hospitals based on reports of unintentional separation during withdrawal in angioplasty procedures, and implantations to dissolve blood clots, respectively. These defects may complicate procedures or require secondary surgeries. The recall does not affect patients who have already had successful surgeries.
