The initial recall on March 17, 2007, included only wet dog and cat pet food manufactured by Menu Foods. However, on March 30, 2007, the FDA extended that recall to include dry cat pet food. The two most recent products being recalled are 4 pound and 40 pound bags of Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food.

The number of pets that have fallen ill or died as a result of this contamination is climbing daily. Some reports believe that numbers could be well into the thousands, while Menu Foods claims a very limited number of confirmed pets that have been affected.

Pet owners are looking for answers and are slowly being told what might have caused the death of their pets, but these answers are not helping heal their wounds. What is even worse is that these people cannot recover for the loss of their pets beyond the cost of veterinary bills because pets are considered property, which means no emotional damages are allowed. Pet owners should still contact a lawyer if their pets have been affected by the food contamination. The manufacturers of pet food need to be held responsible for their actions and the only way to do this is to have pet owners come forward and report the deaths of their pets.
